On Mar 30, 2023, the Department of Applied Language Studies, Comparative Linguistics, and Translation (the Foreign Philology Faculty, Mykhailo Drahomanov State University of Ukraine) in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania), and Institute of English and American Studies (University of Gdańsk, Poland) held Fourth International Scientific and Practical Conference LANGUAGE PHILOSOPHY AND NEW TRENDS IN TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC STUDIES” (the Program and papers can be downloaded HERE).

The Dean of the Foreign Philology Faculty of Mykhailo Drahomanov State University of Ukraine, DSc, Prof. Alla Zernetska opened the Plenary Session having outlined the most essential directions of further prospects and wished all the participants professional achievements, lots of success, and public recognition.

There were 4 keynote speakers:

1) Dr Ramunė Kasperė, Professor, the Head of the Research group – Language and Technologies, an expert involved in studying the impact of technologies on society, language, culture and education, technopedagogy in languages, research ethics and experimental research methodology, Vice-dean for Research of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities at Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania, presented the topical and very interesting subject Academia and ChatGPT: will it Trend to Be a Friend in the End?

2) Two researchers from Poland, University of Gdańsk: Dr Danuta Stanulewicz, Associate Professor, Head of the Section of Glottodidactics and Natural Language Processing, Institute of English and American Studies, and her doctoral student MA Konrad Radomyski told about their coupus study on the Adjectives ‘light’ and ‘dark’ in Astrophysical Texts.

3) Dr Olga Vorobyova, Professor at the Department of Theory, Practice and Translation of English, National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, being a famous Ukrainian researcher in Germanic studies, General Linguistics, and Cognitive studies of fiction, a founder of scientific school in Cognitive Poetics in Ukraine, a President of Ukrainian Association of Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics, enlightened the audience on Tropology of Perception from the Cognitive Semantic Perspective: PopSci vs. Intellectual Fiction.

4) Dr Pavlo Shopin, Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Language Studies, Comparative Linguistics, and Translation, who defended his PhD in Germanic studies in Cambridge (and who has been running the group of students in practical translation for several years already) provided interesting views on the Opposite Meanings the Translators Produce.

Then, the results of the VIIth International Student Translation Contest “Translation as a Key to Cultural and Linguistic Worldviews” which is held annually were announced (the detailed information and the collection of best translations are located HERE).

There was also a break-out session for young researchers.

In the end, all the participants of the Conference were invited to submit the results of their research to the Scientific Journal of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University. Series 9. Current Trends in Language Development (that is under reregistration at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine at the moment). The next issue will be published in June this year. The deadline for submission is Apr 25. The latest requirements can be found HERE.

Finally, the Organizers of the Conference expressed their gratitude to all the participants of this event – both the presenters and the listeners (there were 135 participants from 18 higher educational institutions from 3 countries) and wished them to be safe, healthy and happy!

There is a belief that the outcomes of the researchers in Language Philosophy, Translation and Linguistic Studies can inspire the participants to develop, improve, and strive for new personal achievements!
